چکیده
RESULTS Eighty-nine ears in 83 patients aged 7 to 85 years were included. Transmeatal tympanoplasty was performed in 17 ears (19%). Seven ears (8%) underwent tympanoplasty with canal wall–downmastoidectomy, and 65 ears (73%) underwent canal wall–up (combined approach) tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy. The study population comprised 61 primary tympanoplasties (69%) and 28 revision cases (31%). Mean follow-up was 13 months. Overall, the ABG significantly improved from amean (SD; range) of 26.19 (11.53; 3.75-51.25) dB to 15.58 (9.80; 0-48.75) dB (P < .01 for all frequencies). Mean ABG improvement was 10.62 dB. Successful postoperative hearing was obtained in 65 ears (73%). Revision surgery, especially in ears with ossicular chain disruption without inflammatory disease, was associated with poorer functional outcome, whereas preservation of themalleus was associated with a better functional outcome (P < .05). There were few complications (1 prosthesis extrusion, 2 prosthesis dislocations, 2 reperforations, 3 cases of residual cholesteatoma, and 3 of light sensorineural hearing loss).

Background & Aim: The most common surgically treatable causes of hearing loss are middle ear diseases among which the greatest effect is related to ossicular chain dysfunction. Successful ossicular chain reconstruction certainly improves air conduction thresholds and closes air-bone gap in audiograms, but the effect of this procedure on bone conduction thresholds has remained to be elucidat...
متن کاملEffect of Ossicular Reconstruction on Tinnitus
Background and Objective:Tinnitus is hearing a sound without an external source, which occurs anywhere in the head and one or both ears. It is one of the most common symptoms associated with hearing loss due to chronic otitis media. This study aimed to determine the effect of autologous primary ossicular reconstruction on the recovery of tinnitus due to chronic otitis media. Materials and Meth...
متن کاملComparing the Incidence of Residual Cholesteatoma Using two Canal Wall Down and Endoscopic-assisted Intact Canal Wall Tympanomastoidectomy Methods
Background: For many years, Canal Wall Down (CWD) tympanomastoidectomy has been the gold standard for treatment of cholesteatoma; however, this method has long-term complications for the patients. The Intact Canal Wall (ICW) tympanomastoidectomy has relatively lower complications, but access to the middle-ear recesses is difficult in this method. Therefore, endoscopy is used to visualize the un...
متن کاملCLASSIFICATION OF CONGENITAL MIDDLE AND EXTERNAL EAR MALFORMATIONS: CT STUDY
The authors used high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) for studying 52 congenitally malformed ears in 45 children between five and 10 years of age. In six children the malformations were bilateral. The malformations clinically manifested as microtia, atresia of the external auditory canal and conductive deafness. Analyzing anatomical details and pathological changes on HRCT axial sec...
متن کاملCombined aesthetic and functional reconstruction of ear malformations.
BACKGROUND Surgery for major malformations of the outer and middle ear involves aesthetic as well as functional aspects. Whereas reconstruction of the auricle with autogenous rib cartilage is well established and has shown favorable results, functional repair using classic reconstructive techniques is possible only in a limited group of patients and the outcome is often unsatisfactory. Active m...
